LTIs (Learning Tools Interoperability) are plug-ins available for your Canvas shell that enhance the learning experience for students! The Education Portfolio with support from the College Learning and Teaching teams are keen on offering support, guidance and testing of these tools to ensure that our academic community can integrate them seamlessly and effectively.

Ally

ALLY is a tool to help make course material more accessible and usable for all students and provides helpful feedback to academics and teachers.

ALLY provides a more inclusive experience for students with disabilities, second language learners and other non-traditional learners. Even students who do not identify as disabled have indicated a preference for the audio format (MP3) for longer documents, so they can listen while doing other things or prevent eye strain.

ALLY’s two main functions:

Evaluate documents uploaded to Canvas and, for those documents which do not comply with accessibility guidelines, provide instructions to improve the accessibility of the document.
Provide students with multiple formats of the original document so they can select the one that best fits their unique needs. For example, Ally can convert a PDF document, into an audio format MP3 file.

What students will see.

In Canvas most file types will have a drop-down menu where you can download the file. ALLY creates another option to download accessible versions of that file.

When a student selects “Alternative formats”, a dialogue with all of the formats that content is available to be downloaded becomes available.

Leganto

Leganto is reading list software that can assist you to create interactive, collaborative reading lists for your course.

Reading lists are an interactive and collaborative way of managing course readings.

Instructors/teachers can:

create structured, annotated reading lists
generate analytics and reports to gain insight into the materials that students use
keep lists up to date from year to year in an easy manner

Students can:

collaborate and share views, feedback, and questions with classmates and instructors
discover new materials from peers’ suggestions and automated content recommendations
gather resources into a personal repository directly from discovery systems, scholarly sources, publishers’ sites, online bookstores and other websites

Turnitin 2.0

The Education Designers in the College of Business’s Learning and Teaching Portfolio have been a part of the user testing for Turnitin 2.0 (Turnitin Plagiarism Framework).

The main strengths that the new plagiarism framework provides are that it:

supports multiple file uploads
reads and reports on multiple simultaneous file submissions
supports fractional grades
supports group assignment submissions!.

Also take note, staff will only grade in one place, the SpeedGrader in Canvas, and stuents will view all of their assessment results and feedback in the one place, the SpeedGrader.

The Turnitin Plagiarism Framework

When setting up a Canvas Assignment, practice at RMIT has been to mute the assignment immediately.

If an assignment is muted before its due date, any feedback that staff may provide is not available to students. Examples include feedback to draft submissions, as well as Turnitin originality scores/reports.

The assignment should be muted from the due date, once grading is about to commence. The assignment can then be unmuted once ready to release results.
