“Community of Inquiry is breaking through the social barriers that exist because of the transactional distance between students and instructors. These human qualities, established through personal sharing, help students develop a sense of trust in and connection with an instructor”

Communicating, Facilitating and Teaching Online is an online resource that aims to build the skills necessary to provide inspiring and engaging online learning and teaching experiences.

Whether you are an emerging online facilitator, an experienced online facilitator, or a course coordinator focusing on providing a high quality, learner-centred learning experience for all students, this resource has something to offer you. Good teaching is good teaching irrespective of whether you are online or face-to-face.

We have used many frameworks and concepts in the development of this resource. The application of the Community of Inquiry (CoI) model to online learning and teaching is perhaps the one we like most. Garrison (1996)  identifies three elements essential to an educational transaction – cognitive presence, social presence, and teacher presence.

As you work through this resource, think about these three elements and how the strategies and examples provided activate each element in various learning transactions to help produce really exceptional experiences.
